I never would have thought that my website would see such a sensitive topic. We are, however, currently making history in Romania and the following days are decisive for our future. I don't know how the events of these days will turn out for my country, but one thing is for sure: we are witnessing the rise of a golden nation, a latent force reunited and determined to speak up!
On January 31, at precisely 10 pm, the Justice Minister announces that the Government has just decided to urgently issue a decree meant to decompress overcapacity in Romanian prisons. Basically every abuse of power of less than 44.000 Euro will not be sentenced to prison after the decree is formalized 10 days forward, with all open corruption files being annulled. Including the one of Liviu Dragnea, the leader of the political party that runs the country... and some other hundreds of controversial public figures that are somehow connected to the leftist party...

What is happening these days seems like a long awaited plan to reinstate the benefits of personal interests. A president with limited powers and a fragile legal system can hardly stop this massive attack over justice: the tools at their disposal look rather weak since the leading party strongly controls both the Government and the Parliament. That is until Romania has found the strongest ally possible - the voice of the street!
After the January 31 late announcement, thousands of fantastic people rallied to make their opinion heard. The Victoriei Square in front of the Government building was incredibly full in only one hour, despite being almost midnight. The same happened in the country, where the main cities literally rose from their beds, forgot about their usual evening activities and vowed to tell exactly what they felt: Romania will not accept the attack over justice so easily!
The reaction is absolutely fantastic, since we Romanians outside the system are sick and tired of politics. Some of us remember about it whenever there's an election, while others are so disgusted with the political class that never bother about it. We adhiacentally know what's happening but we usually stay indifferent because we have other better things to do: build a career, a reputation, personal branding or a beautiful family. All while we leave politics for others, knowing that we cannot get involved without breaking down the wide tentacles of the system.
5 days already went by, and the feeling of hostility grew stronger and stronger: Romania hasn't seen such a reaction since communism was abolished in December 1989! The climax was reached yesterday, when almost 400.000 people peacefully protested in all the cities of Romania, making the world know about our problems and how we understand to exercise freedom of speech. All these days I've also seen photos from almost every important city in the world, with Romanian groups sustaining our cause and conducting the most unique fight against corruption!
February 1, 2017: 150.000 people peacefully protest in Victoriei Square
This beginning of February was the perfect time to prove our immense creativity, ironic feeling and sense of humor. If there was a contest for the best protest worldwide, I am 100% sure we would win it by far! While making sure the main message is loudly heard, the feeling of belonging to the public gathering is absolutely amazing: ages between 1 and 100!! years old, corporate professionals, entrepreneurs, students or public figures, everyone is in the streets these days. That is except for the typical PSD voter - the toothless rural citizen who is promised a small raise in his wage, pension or unemployment benefits and is usually vital in the success of this party...

Staying outside these days made me feel a curious combination of fun and disgust. When so many brilliant, creative minds are tested, it's impossible not to create something remarkable:
A Romanian entrepreneur moving his office in Victoriei Square; working by day, protesting by night
Liviu Dragnea punned by misusing the word "bullshit"
Some hostels offer free accommodation for those coming to protest in Romania. Other companies offer free food, coffee, tea and snacks to people in the square. A kindergarden cares for children while their parents are protesting. Oh, and by the way, yesterday morning even a children marche has been organized, causing ironic reactions in social media such as this one - the Government building in under the attack of soothers!

Leaving joke aside, what happens these days in Romania is of severe gravity: a handful of people looking to legalize their old ways of stealing money, eventually separating us from our international partners and leading Romania into chaos. They have even tried to break the spirit of our movement, by infiltrating agitators to turn protests into violence, threatening with fines or even announcing a superficial step back with the annulment of the emergency decree - a postponement actually meant to diminish the unbelievable pressure of the streets.
Well, neither these nor low temperatures or any other accusations can stop us! It is our time now, almost 30 years after our parents fought hard to abolish communism! We have different methods in 2017 - we are using the power of words, and we are a complex, well-informed society that is not willing to back down from our beliefs. Their plan backfired and only managed to reunite us, to awake the patriotism inside us and the sense of membership to an amazing country that needs to stay on its recent ascending path. With all other countries in the region seemingly turning towards East, we'd rather stay sophisticated, keep our eyes open for opportunities and value our enormous qualities!
With that being said - there's a big gathering waiting outside for me! I stop here with optimism in my heart and the same love for Romania I have always had. Romania - a civilized European country that shares a lesson of patriotism, of democracy, of standing out for personal values and beliefs!
